• The basic rules are those of the Canadian Football League with out the linemen and with no contact. It is played 7 players against 7 players with a quarterback, receivers, and defensive backs. A deliberate touch above the waist stops play. The defence uses a rusher from 5 yards off the line of scrimmage, who rushes the quarterback. All players on offence are eligible to catch the ball. The offence has 3 downs to get 10 yards for a first down. There are no field goals, but after a touchdown teams can go for a single point from the 5 yard line or two points from the 10 yard line. Each game is 74 minutes in length, broken down into two 37 minute halves.
2. Who plays touch football?
• Touch football is played across Canada in every province. There are dozens of open tournaments across Canada each year. There is also a national ranking system, provincial championships, and a national championship. Kelowna is the host to one of Canada’s first tournaments of the season, May Bowl, which is held in Kelowna each year over the Victoria Day Weekend.
3. Who plays touch football in Kelowna and how competitive is it?
• The KTFL has been in existence for over 30 years. Each team has a 14-20 man roster and most players are between 16 – 60 years of age. There are two divisions in the KTFL so players of all ability levels are welcome to join a team.
• The Division I teams are best for players with some football experience who are looking for the highest level of competition.
• The Division II teams are best for players looking to develop football skills, and/or play football at a slightly less competitive level than Division I.
4. How do I join?
• The KTFL is expanding this year and is welcoming new players. To join an existing team in the KTFL send an email to ktflpres@gmail.com. One of the league’s executives will contact you and assist you in joining a team that is a good fit for you.
5. How do I start a team?
• The KTFL is looking to increase the number of teams in both Division I and Division II. If you would like to enter a team into the KTFL send an email to kelownatouchfootball@gmail.com One of the league’s executives will contact you and assist you in entering a team.
6. Do I need to have football experience?
• No, you do not need to have experience. Many current players in the league played their first organized game of football in the KTFL. You only need a desire to play touch football.
7. How much does it cost?
• If the team you join has a sponsor, there is no cost to play in the KTFL as a player. If the team you join does not have a sponsor the cost may vary from $50 to $75 for the season depending on team size
8. Where and when are the games?
• Games are played on Sundays. Game times are 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm. Each team plays 8 - 10 games per season plus playoffs.
• There are two seasons for touch football; Spring and Fall. The spring season runs from April to June and the fall season runs from September to November. You may play in both seasons each year or only one if you are unable to play in both seasons.
